Murmurs
Bringing data systems to life
A quarantine project of mine designed with Processing, Murmurs visualizes data sets as swooping, swelling flocks, or murmurations, of starlings. Thousands of individuals undulating as one mass. A user can interact by moving their mouse through the flock, interrupting and rechanneling its flow. Or a user can pause the flocking animation and select individual birds to inspect the data object that bird represents.
From the onset, the interaction and behavior of ecosystems seemed like a tasty thematic fit for Murmurs. So I’ve leveraged the public NPSpecies Rest API provided by IRMA to incorporate species data for a subset of US National Parks. Each bird in the flock now represents an individual species of organism with all its associated population data.
I hope to launch Murmurs this fall, and will add the links below as soon as possible.
